Someone who has not yet done an update to 2014.1 could help understand if the problem exists by doing something like checking "Highways" as an avoidance just before the map update. I can't really immediately help because all I had in the units before the last map update were unpaved roads and I do not know a close place to simulate to see if they are being ignored. What I take away from the OP is that a map update leaves the "avoidances" intact in the unit - but ignores them after the update is completed. What a PIA it would have been if I had a slew of avoidances programmed in and had to reinstall them each time I get a map upgrade. I deleted them, and set them up again, and another test drive showed they worked. They were in the Garmin, and it said they were active. After updating my Nuvi 2595 with the new maps, went out for a drive and found that the road avoidances were ignored on a route.
